Calorie Balance (“the App,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) helps users track meals, nutrition, calorie balance, and activity information. This Privacy Policy explains what information the App collects, how it is used, and the choices you have.

Information We Collect

The App may collect or process the following information, depending on which features you choose to use:

  • Meal and nutrition data: meal names, meal times, servings, calories, macronutrients, ingredients, notes, favorite meals, and related nutrition details you enter or generate in the App.
  • Food photos: photos you choose to capture or submit for meal analysis.
  • Barcode data: product barcodes you scan to look up nutrition information.
  • Health and fitness data from Health Connect: active calories burned, basal metabolic rate, total calories burned, steps, exercise sessions, sleep, weight, height, body fat, lean body mass, body water mass, bone mass, floors climbed, heart rate, and resting heart rate.
  • Manual activity data: activity type, calories, start time, end time, and activity records that you choose to add.
  • Account data: if you sign in with Google, we may process your Firebase user ID, display name, and email address for authentication and sync.
  • Preferences: calorie and macro goals, unit system, serving-size preferences, body metrics you enter, and related app settings.
  • Technical data: device, network, authentication, App Check, and diagnostic information handled by service providers used to run the App.

How We Use Information

We use information to provide and improve the App’s features, including to:

  • Calculate calorie balance, nutrition totals, goals, and trends.
  • Display health, activity, and meal history inside the App.
  • Analyze meal descriptions or food photos when you request nutrition estimates.
  • Look up product nutrition information from scanned barcodes.
  • Write manual activity records to Health Connect when you choose to add them.
  • Sync your meals, favorites, manual activities, and preferences across your devices if you sign in.
  • Protect the App and backend services from abuse, fraud, and unauthorized access.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and improve App reliability.

Health Connect Data

The App requests access to Health Connect only after you grant permission. Health Connect permissions are used to read health and fitness records for calorie balance and activity tracking, and to write manual activity records you create in the App.

Health Connect data is used only to provide user-facing health, activity, calorie, and nutrition features in the App. We do not sell Health Connect data. We do not use Health Connect data for advertising. We do not transfer Health Connect data to data brokers or information resellers.

You can change or revoke Health Connect permissions at any time in Android settings or the Health Connect app. If you revoke permissions, some App features may stop working or show only locally cached information.

Local Storage

The App stores meal logs, favorites, manual activities, preferences, and cached Health Connect summaries on your device so the App can work quickly and show your history. Android cloud backup and device-transfer backup are disabled for App data.

Optional Cloud Sync and Sign-In

If you sign in with Google, the App uses Firebase Authentication to identify your account and Firebase Firestore to sync selected App data. Synced data may include meal logs, nutrition details, favorites, manual activities, and preferences. Sync is optional; if you do not sign in, this data remains local to your device except where you choose to use network-based features described in this policy.

Synced data is associated with your Firebase user ID and may be stored on Google Firebase infrastructure. Firebase App Check may be used to help protect backend access.

Cloud backup can be deleted from the settings page.

Meal Analysis and Food Photos

When you ask the App to analyze a meal description or food photo, the text or image you provide may be sent to Google’s Firebase AI / Vertex AI services to generate nutrition estimates. Photos are processed only when you choose to submit them for analysis. The App may downscale photos before submission.

Do not submit photos or notes containing information you do not want processed for meal analysis.

Barcode Lookup

When you scan or enter a barcode, the App may send the barcode to Open Food Facts to retrieve product and nutrition information. Open Food Facts may process the request according to its own privacy practices.

Camera Permission

The App uses camera permission for barcode scanning and food photo capture. Camera access is used only for features you initiate. You can revoke camera permission in Android settings.

Sharing and Service Providers

We do not sell your personal information. We may share or process information with service providers that help operate App features, including:

  • Google Health Connect: health and fitness data access controlled by your Android permissions.
  • Google Firebase Authentication: account sign-in.
  • Google Firebase Firestore: optional cloud sync.
  • Google Firebase App Check / Play Integrity: backend abuse prevention.
  • Google Firebase AI / Vertex AI: optional meal text and food photo analysis.
  • Open Food Facts: optional barcode-based product lookup.

These providers may process information according to their own terms and privacy policies.

Retention and Deletion

Data stored locally remains on your device until you delete it in the App, clear App data, uninstall the App, or otherwise remove it from your device. Data synced through Firebase remains associated with your account until deleted through App functionality, backend deletion tools, or a support request.

To request deletion of cloud-synced account data, contact us at [insert-contact-email]. We may need information sufficient to verify the account associated with the request.

Your Choices

  • You can use the App without signing in, subject to limits on cloud sync.
  • You can revoke Health Connect permissions in Android or Health Connect settings.
  • You can revoke camera permission in Android settings.
  • You can sign out to stop additional cloud sync activity from your account.
  • You can delete local App data by using Android app storage controls or uninstalling the App.
  • You can contact us to request deletion of cloud-synced account data.

Children’s Privacy

The App is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us so we can take appropriate action.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information processed by the App, including platform permission controls, Firebase authentication, and App Check protections. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

International Processing

Service providers used by the App may process information in the United States or other countries where they operate. By using features that rely on those providers, you understand that information may be processed outside your state, province, or country.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date and, where appropriate, provide additional notice in the App or on our website.
