mkv/avi to dvrms

I dont know if the conversion does this by default, but when encoding does it uses more then one core. If not how would i go about setting it to use more then one core? Is there a settingin FFmpeg/mencoder to change.

Is there a version of ffmpeg or mencoder than can write DVR-MS?

Or is the DVR-MS support only for reading DVR-MS files for converting to other formats? I've been ripping some DVDs for use on my Extender, and DVR-MS is a better format than MPG, because it supports FF/RW and automatically provides Cover art and cast info. Mencoder DVR-MS to AVI

I am trying to convert DVR-MS files in SD and HD to 480p avi's that I can play on my PDA. I am using the Mencoder profile configured with the good quality Xvid.
