  • Understanding Merit to Optimize Playback

    I’m going to assume some familiarity with DirectShow and how it works, but if miss that mark and don’t explain something that isn’t common knowledge please let me know and I’ll dig into it further. There is a ton of really good information about DirectShow on MSDN and other places, so I don’t want to...

  • Scanning unsupported files for commercials

    Say you have a file that isn’t supported by Comskip or ShowAnalyzer that you’d like to automatically scan for commercials. There are a couple of reasons for this; either the codec isn’t supported or the container isn't (or both). Fortunately the approach to solving both issues is the same. In this...

  • H.264 -> DVR-MS

    Struck me while I was out walking the dog last night that part of bringing DirectTV tuners to WMC is modifing the SBE to support H.264 video. If this is correct, this is great news for everyone looking to archive ATSC MPEG content in a smaller format.

  • DSGraphEdit : a .NET version of GraphEdit

    Just found this: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/audio-video/dsgraphedit.aspx DSGraphEdit is a library to easily add functionality similar to Microsoft's venerable GraphEdit to your .NET applications. • Update on Streaming TV / SBE Trouble

    It's been a month since I started looking at streaming tv b/w WMC PC's at first I was interested in it conceptually, but the more I dug into it the more it seemed like something that was very realistic given the tools / code available. I ended up discarding both approaches discussed in the earlier...

  • Media Broker - Streaming TV

    Back in February I started thinking about what was the biggest missing piece of an all PC based Media Center solution. I got thinking about this again after a recent post by Charlie Owen about how they could better document Microsoft's approach to the "Connected Home". It's a great...

  • Creating DVR-MS files

    It's been a long time since I've bored anyone with some programing, but given the dearth of information on use the Stream Buffer Engine (SBE) to create DVR-MS files (especially using managed code) I figured it was time to share; maybe save someone else the pain of figuring this out. The code...

  • WMC does publish the graph

    Somewhere in the progression from beta to RTM (I don't remember exactly when) playback graphs stopped being published to the ROT in Vista. Or at least that's what everyone (myself included) reported. It turns out that WMC never stopped publishing, something in the platform changed and you need...
