    Failed install, can't uninstall .. Vista

    Hi,

    First off, I am running Vista and using Media Center to record TV programs.  I don’t care about cutting out commercials.  What I DO care about is converting Media Center’s .dvr-ms files to .mpg and retaining the Closed Captions, as I have a significant hearing loss.  I thought DTb might be the right product for that.  If that initial assumption is incorrect, please let me know!

    Anyway, I attempted to install V 1206.  Got several error messages during the install .. sorry I didn’t save them, but I believe they were regarding failures trying to register DLLs.  Still, the installation completed.  However, when I try to convert a .dvr-ms file, I get the following error:

    “Error in Do Work - Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {3E8868CB-5FE8-402C-AA90-CB1AC6AE3240} failed due to the following error: 80040154.

    Action did not complete successfully”

    I assumed this was because of the errors during installation, so I figured I’d uninstall and then re-attempt.  However, I can’t uninstall.  When I attempt to, all I get is an empty dialog box (presumably for an error, but there is no text).  When I click OK, the uninstall rolls back.

    I read through several threads in the forum, including the “Can’t Repair or Remove” topic.  There was mention of doing a manual install using a command file called: UnregisterCommercialSkipAddin.cmd”, but I cannot find that anywhere.

    Bottom line, I would be forever appreciative if someone could help me: (1) uninstall DTb, and (2) tell me if this is the right tool to do what I want, which is convert .dvr-ms file to .mpg and retain closed captioning.

    Thanks in advance!

    To answer your first question, CC are not retained in the mpeg.  Out of curoisity why do you want to convert to mpeg?  The tool can convert to WMV and retain the CC (for NTSC)...

    If it won't uninstall, you can either do a system restore to a time before it was installed or you can do a manual uninstall.

    • close Media Center
    • Use this tool to remove the msi entries
    • run "%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\installutil /u "%programfiles%\dvrmstoolbox\dvrmstoolboxservice.exe" from an elevated cmd prompt
    • run "%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\installutil /u "%programfiles%\dvrmstoolbox\dvrmsfilewatcherservice.exe" from an elevated cmd prompt
    • delete HKLM\Software\DVRMSToolbox
    • delete HKCR\CLSID\{D9FEC5A0-0295-43F3-B4F8-E4E07A9F9FC7
    • delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Extensibility\Applications\{a1465b9b-3216-4dd2-9760-e7d3a62abece}
    • delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Extensibility\Categories\Background\{05b8fe4d-d3cf-4d63-944a-48a92114e0db}
    • delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Extensibility\Entry Points\{05b8fe4d-d3cf-4d63-944a-48a92114e0db}
    • delete any instances of CommercialSkipAddIn.dll, MceStateConsumer.dll, MceStateInterfaces.dll and MemMapFile.dll from windows\assembly and from windows\ehome
    • kill ehmsas.exe
    • delete the install directory
    • reboot

    Thanks so much for your quick and detailed response!  I was hoping for an .mpg solution because I use Hauppauge's MediaMVP device/software to play the recordings on my TV, and to the best of my knowledge, it only supports MPEG-1/2 and DivX formats.  I have no personal preference of MPG over WMV.  Perhaps I should convert my files to WMV and then find some other way than MediaMVP to play them on the TV.  If you have any recommendations for that, I'd appreciate them.

    In the meantime, I will follow your instructions for manually removing Dtb.  Hopefully that will go well, and then I can try a reinstall.  I'll write back if either of those two steps fail somewhere along the way.

    Much Obliged!

    I've been trying to find a way to persist CC in the conversion from DVR-MS to MPG for about as long as I've been working on the tool.  If you find a way let me know.  Jelwood (another user on the site) recently started a project to use ffmpeg to convert dvr-ms to mpeg, I'll ask him if the CC are persisted, and if not if he could estimate effort to include them.
