    Fails to convert DVR-MS to WMV

    Firstly I must confess to being a newbie.  Secondly I must confess what I am really trying to do is find a painless way to convert DVR-MS to DivX for archiving my Recorded TV on DVD

    But as a way to that nirvana I am much taken by the promise of DVRMSToolbox, I am using version 1.1.01 and am trying to convert a DVB-T recording of Crocodile Dundee II (I know shoot me - but the kids like it) to WMV, and get the following error message:

    InputFile=C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Recorded TV\Crocodile Dundee II_ITV 2_21_08_2006_23_29_02.dvr-ms
    Processing actions, this may take some time!!
    Profile = dvr2wmv
    ProcessId = 3332
    Throttle DVRMStoMPEG
    FWThrottle: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Recorded TV\Crocodile Dundee II_ITV 2_21_08_2006_23_29_02.dvr-ms
    Waiting to process file
    Queue file
    Duration = 00:00:01
    Waiting to process...
    Processing now...
    Convert DVR-MS to WMV using DVR2WMV
    Begin conversion of C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Recorded TV\Crocodile Dundee II_ITV 2_21_08_2006_23_29_02.dvr-ms to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Recorded TV\Crocodile Dundee II.wmv
    COM object with CLSID {3EBC8DFD-87ED-4E41-B02A-ADC97C0F8FC1} is either not valid or not registered.
    Duration = 00:00:00.0468750

    What am I doing wrong / need to do?

    Regards

    install dvr2wmv or run regsvr32 c:\program files\dvrmstoolbox\dvr2wmv.dll

    babgvant:

    Still unable to Convert commercial-free DVR-MS files to WMV format at a decent bitrate/quality). I believe that the problem lies somewhere between the output of the commercial cut file and the PRX file in the DVR2WMV process. I'm using the cbrNTSC.prx because I want higher quality output. I've tried the IC filter method as well and each process stops @ 99.99% and hangs forever. The resultant files are unnavigable (e.g. no FF, REW etc.).

    I had limited success using Toolbox using vbrNTSC.prx (this result was a poor quality small file). I also had success using the DVR2WMV standalone and  that's why I think it has something to do with the output file from commercial cutting. I tried both Comskip and SA and both had the same problem.

    Has anyone who has had this problem ever gotten it resolved? Sure love the potential of this program and I do use it, but I have to combine it with PowerCompress to get WMV files without intervention (and I hate PC!).

    P.S. I was running D-Toolbox as I was writing this. Still NO joy! It hung at 99.99% (I've been tweaking every thing in the program and profiles for 2 days with no luck.)

    I'm not the expert here. But, I'll tell ya what worked for me.

    comskip and sa detect commercials, they wouldn't effect the conversion to wmv.

    what mpeg decoder are you using?
    have you changed any settings in dvr2wmvstandalone, like setting the prefered decoders?
    did you install dvr2wmv before or after dvrmstoolbox?
    when you run the same file that fails in dvrmstoolbox through dvr2wmvstandalone does it work?
    is your content NTSC or PAL?
    does dvrmstoolbox work on files that haven't been cut?

    i don't have dvr2wmvstandalone installed on my machine, you could try uninstalling it and registering the dvr2wmv.dll in the dvrmstoolbox folder and seeing if that works...

    It appears that I have a few installed, but I don't know what is being used. Are there any that I shouldn't have installed? Any specific codec I should try?

    I haven't changed decoders in standalone.

    I tried using Toolbox before installing DVR2WMV and after with the same results. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling both programs several times in different order.

    I tried registering the dvr2wmv.dll in your installation and the other (and they were different), but still same result.

    The same commercial-free file was used in both programs. In standalone it completes; in Toolbox it hangs at 99.99%. (The DVRMStoMPEG.exe program stays running in Task Manager with ~55MB, but NO CPU usage and the process has to be manually ended.)

    My content is NTSC. And before you ask, I've tried the profile with IC filter and got the same results. I also tried all the video .prx files I could find (not just the included ones). I had one successful converstion using vbrNTSC.prx, but the resulting file was of poor quality and very small.

    Yes, DVRMSToolbox does work on unedited files. That's why I think it happens after the cutfile but before conversion. Maybe the spliced file is missing some info...?

    I'm not the expert here. But, I'll tell ya what worked for me.

    when it hangs @99%, is the file playable? does it contain the entire video?

    I've been thinking that maybe the "right" way to deal with this issue is to design around the problem.  I could set a threshold for the number of 99% interations, and once over the threshold, end the conversion and migrate the metadata, and possibly index the file; I'd have to figure out the last part, there is a GUI tool in the wmencoder sdk that does this, so it's definitly possible.

    To babgvant:

    When the process hangs, what I'm left with is a playable file. But, it won't advance. The slider in any program is useless and often even the pause button. It appears that the whole video is there, but even the duration in the players is not there. I have confirmed that I can get a completed video using lower quality .prx files in IC mode. The resulting videos are choppy and blurring, however.

    does the file have metadata?

    No. If you hold the cursor on it you just get file size; no description. It appears DVR2MPEG.EXE hangs in Task Mgr. so maybe the dvr2wmv.dll isn't completing and releasing processes back to it so it can close.

    The workaround - ending the conversion, copying metadata, indexing the file - is complete and will be included in the next rev.

    I'm having this problem, except it gets hung on 100%.  It doesn't "repeat" - there is only a single 100%.  The resulting video plays, and the metadata is there, but FF/Rewind don't work.  Thoughts?  Thanks!

    which conversion action is it?

    can you post the relevant bits of the log file.

    It's processing something else right now, so I can't get the full log file.  However, it started processing, but just never came back after 100%.  Now, I should note that I added a RenameFile action to the end.  Lemme try removing that and see if it works before you chase anything down on your end.
