Handling of copy protected .wtv files

I am using DvrmsToolbox 1.2.2.6 and Comskip 0.81.036 on Windows 7 64 bits with a Hauppauge WinTV-DCR-2650 CableCARD tuner. Everything is working perfectly, the DvrmsToolbox / Comskip solution is able to scan and jump over most of the commercials in most of my .wtv recording - and it is even working fine on my Xbox 360 and Linksys extenders.

The only doubt I have that I have not been able to find any answer for, is what to expect concerning copy protected .wtv recordings. I have noticed that if recording movies from for example TNT HD or FX HD they are normally marked as protected. I guess that means the content is encrypted, and that is why comskip fails to detect any commercials in those recordings. I do actually not expect that is possible to solve, as those files cannot be converted to any other format and as far as I know they can only be played back in Media Center on the same system as they were recorded.

My question is if there is a way to configure the DvrmsToolbox / File Watcher to avoid sending any protected .wtv files to comskip for processing, or alternatively - if I can make comskip reject to scan protected .wtv files? At the moment all recordings are send to comskip for analyze, which in some cases will spend up to 2 hours to detect a lot of "Uniform frame with brightness of 128 and uniform of xx" and finally just result in "Not enough or too much logo's found (0.05), disabling the use of Logo detection".

    Thanks...Ole

Good question. One that I dealt with myself a short time ago. My recording are made with the InfiniTV card card recorder, and many are marked as protected.

Start the Processing Condition Editor that is part of the dvrms toolbox suite of programs. Then add a new condition. Give it a name like "Don't mess with protected files" and then add a condition by clicking the 'add' button. Choose WM/WMRVContentProtectedPercent, select greater than and add 0.

Then choose a profile from the drop down list to run when you've got a copy protected file. I made a custom one that just renames the file creates a 'fake' commercials file and ends.

The reason you have to use the percent and not the yes/no is for some reason, some recordings are not flagged correctly, but the percentage is always correct.

Using this method I'vehad 100% success for months now.

    Good luck!

Thank you very much for the hints. I see that it should be possible to filter which files to process in this way. I was wondering if I could just make the "Everyfile" filter look for files with WMRVContentProtectedPercent equal 0. However, I am now finding that most of my recordings actually are flagged as protected, and 100%.... even that comskip is able to process most of them. It seems like all recordings from the "CableCard channels" are marked as 100% protected, but it is only recorded movies that seems not to be able to be processed by comskip. It is probably related to how my tuner is handling this. I will probably just let it try to process all files, I am still not sure if it will try over and over again for ever, or if it gives up at some point. It seems like comskip has been busy on my system since I installed, but I have set it back to just one worker now (default), so the CPU load caused by comskip is limited now.
