    zepperdude:
I tried the new command line and it seems to have fixed that particular show issue. Sound sync is still hit and miss - of by like 1/2 second at the beginning of the video - then cleans up - then goes out of sync - then comes back  etc ...

Anytime I try on small sample like I could send you sync seems fine. Too bad I couldn't upload a full 1/2 hour show ...

Can you use WinRAR to split the file into 500MB chunks, and then upload each piece to megaupload.com?  Also, did you try using one of the standard profiles I shipped with Version 10?  Was the AV sync bad with the standard profile as well?

Is anyone interested in a thread dedicated to mencoder profiles?  That would help keep this thread dedicated to getting the tool to work (which it seems to do fantastically for me), but it would also help people trying to get started by collecting various profiles in one place.

I think this is a great idea.  This thread is too long for users to go through and try to get information (plus, some of the information at the beginning of the thread isn't accurate anylonger).  I think it would be great if you started that thread.  Also, if there are profiles that we should add to the default distribution, please post them and I'll add them.  When creating profiles, please make sure you include two special comment lines.

    #DtbExtension=avi
    #dtbhres="-vf scale={0}:-2,harddup"

Both of these comments will be used with the Dtb GUI.  The first line just tells Dtb the extension to use.  Dtb will use the second line to pass the Video Filter switch.  It will fill-in the {0} with the H-res the user configures in the GUI.

Thank you for doing this.  I've been spending all of my free time working on the ffmpeg code, so I haven't had anytime to document Mencoder.  ffmpeg is SLOWLY coming along.  When I have something that looks pretty good, I'll start a new thread for those that would like to help test it.

It took a while, but here it is!

The latest “official” version of ffmpeg is 8761 as of this morning.  However, I haven’t released a full version of ffmpeg yet (I’ve releases special versions for MPG Muxing, and Audio Conversions only).  We’ve ported all the changes we made to Mencoder over to ffmpeg (and the developers even accepted them into the SVN) however, when we hit corruption in a file, we have severe AV sync issues and because of the architecture of ffmpeg we can’t make it recover.  We are still working on it, however, it looks like there will have to be changes to the base architecture of ffmpeg to make it work “correctly” with dvr-ms files.  At this time, I wouldn’t suggest anyone use ffmpeg for dvr-ms files except for special cases (like the MPG Muxing, and Audio Conversions builds that I created).  Also, don’t use the “standard” version of ffmpeg for MPG Muxing or Audio Conversions with dvr-ms files.  I had to make a few changes to ffmpeg so these features would work correctly (and these changes haven’t been accepted into the SVN, and I doubt they ever will be accepted).  Right now only use the custom builds for this, the “standard” build won’t work very well.

The thread linked below has been updated a bit, but we could use some help compiling some profiles.  If anyone has profiles for the iPod or Zune, please post them here: http://babgvant.com/forums/ShowThread.aspx?PostID=3815

    Thanks!

Is AAC encoding working?  Just curious, thanks!

Not really…  Mencoder will currently encode with AAC, however, It won’t play back with DirectShow (in an AVI container), or QuickTime (in an MP4 container).  It will play back in MPlayer and apparently in the PSP (I haven’t verified this myself, but a user in the other thread reported success with the PSP).  Unfortunately, I don’t know enough about AAC to fix it (I’ve tried).  I think the problem is simply with how the stream is tagged and not truly a problem with the encoding, however, I’ve tried adjusting the tags that I know about and nothing I tried worked.  I reported this problem to the MPlayer developers, however, they weren’t interested in fixing it because MPlayer will play the files just fine, plus ffmpeg will encode files that play in QuickTime just fine.  This is one of the big reasons we started working on ffmpeg.  It’s really unfortunate because I think the architecture of Mencoder is better for DVR-MS files, but right now AAC and the MP4 container (at least the MP4 container for QuickTime) just don’t seem to work in Mencoder.

    I just posted Mencoder Version 11.  http://babgvant.com/files/folders/misc/entry4003.aspx

    Changes in Version 11 are:

    1) Changed FPS detection logic.  The AV sync should be improved for some shows

    2) Added more default profiles thanks for onlydarksets and the “OFFICIAL DTb mencoder profile thread

    a. mencoder "input.dvr-ms" -quiet -profile Xvid-small -o "output.avi"

    b. mencoder "input.dvr-ms" -quiet -profile WMV-Archive -o "output.wmv"

    c. mencoder "input.dvr-ms" -quiet -profile PSP-fast -o "output.avi"

Version 11 worked very well with psp profile on a very poor dvr-ms recording.  It maintained synch all the way!!!

Babgvant’s new Mencoder action is really nice.  Is there anyone that would volunteer to write some documentation for it?  I would love to have some nice documentation added to the wiki.

    Please, please, please…

Jelwood the guy from the newer Transcode 360 site replied to your message with some interest.  Can this mencoder convert to DVRMS?  Do you still have the link to the site?

    Edit: Here it is...

Thank you for letting me know.  I didn’t get an E-mail from his site telling me that he responded.  Anyway, I’ll respond to him.

Also, no, Mencoder can’t convert to DVR-MS.  We just got it reading DVR-MS files, I have no idea what it would take to make it write a DVR-MS file.  I really think he would be much better off using the Stream Buffer Engine for this purpose.

Re: Help testing MEncoder with DVR-MS support

    Hi Jelwood,

I just discovered your version of Mencoder yesterday and it's been working perfectly for me. The only thing is that it is a windows binary and in my case I would prefer to be able to convert DVR-MS files under linux. So I was wondering where I could grab the source from? - that way I can try creating a linux build.

    Thanks
