    mkv to anything not working

I've been having a terrible time with mkv files. I've been using the mkv or avi to dvrms profile and the mkv to wtv profile for testing.  For to wtv, at first todvrms was hanging, which I resolved by adding the -v switch. Now, it seems to complete fine, but the wtvs have no video at all.  Everything plays fine as a mkv.  When converting to dvrms, the action states that it has completed successfully, but no actions afterward are completed like moving the file to a different folder and are not mentioned in the logs at all.  Also the playback is SUPER choppy as dvrms.

Ideally I'd like to have them convert to wtv since it is much faster, but then I also need to figure out how to do that and keep downloaded/converted files from being scanned for commercials once moved to the recorded tv folder.

using DTB 1.2.2.0 at the moment.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

    sccrgoalie1,

Hate to be a pest, but this problem is driving me nuts. Do you have any insight? Really appreciate the input!

    Hey,

I guess just a little bit more information from you.  Where are these mkv's coming from (are you converting something to mkv or from the internet)?  Also, what's the ultimate goal.  I keep a lot of my content in the mkv format.  It seems to work fine in media center on pcs and media center on the xbox 360 extender.  I'm just trying to figure out where the problem may be.  My guess is the mkv has audio or something the wtv container doesn't like.

The files are coming from the internet. The ultimate goal is to have something payable on the pc and a linksys extender, preferably also with meta data. I used to do this all the time in the same method. I'd like to keep it pretty automatic as well... I originally followed the automatic download to media center guide from Ben on engadget, and have gone through a few upgrades of dvrmstoolbox since. There was one point when .avi to dvrms stopped working after an upgrade of dvrmstoolbox, but it was solved by stepping back to the version I'm using now. I don't know if there's anything different about the mkv files now vs when they were working, but nothing about the computer has really changed. I guess there's always Windows updates and maybe a few automatic software upgrades, but nothing directly related to dvrmstoolbox or codecs that I can think of. Maybe some divx updates actually ?? I can't pinpoint anything :-(

I'm not sure why this didn't ever happen before, but this log is different and could be why its not working.  Im not sure how to correct it though:

Re: mkv to anything not working

theoldr, did you ever have success in resolving this issue?I too have encountered a similar issue where 90% of a given MKV converts to WTV so that I have FF/RW in Windows 7 Media Center.  The remaining 10% (randomly throughout a given WTV) has playback issues... pixelation, video freezing, etc.  However the audio always plays fine until the video catches up.  I've tried using the -v -wtv and -v -wtv -haali but cannot pinpoint it.  At least it is consistently problematic.  I just prefer to have the FF/RW capability of the WTV rather than playing directly from MKV.  These are all TV shows downloaded from the internet.  Also I only have Matroska/Haali installed on my PC and it works great for MKV playback.  So I know that Codec packs are not an issue here.  Am running the latest DVRMSToolbox 1.2.2.2 and I believe it has Todvrms.exe 1.0.1.6.  Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately no, I never was able to resolve the problem. Ive instead been coping with the lesser functionality If you find a fix though, please be sure to post it here.

Re: mkv to anything not working

There are several issues with MKV and mp4 conversion to WTV etc. 1. While it's true that SOME mkv can be demuxed and then remuxed into wtv (which is just a variation of the m2ts format) that requires that the audio is in a format that wtv supports AND that the video is good h264 properly encoded with no more than level 4.1 and 10,000 mbit/sec and no pryamidal b-frames. If any of these things are wrong it won't work even though it created a valid file (and most of the time they're actually playable in Windows Media Player through other splitters and codecs other than MS's) 2. MKVs come broken ALOT online. I.e. their headers and meta-data is often (I'd say 60% of the time from experience) written incorrectly, which causes issues when decoding the file, so you'll get random memory issues etc. In the case of MP4s which are more popular now for TV, they have the same issues as MKVs for encoding and the audio becomes a much bigger problem because often it's encoded using AAC or something similar. The only reliable way to transcode these to wtv is to do a proper transcode and convert the video and audio to the correct format. I have been unable to make this work however. What I'd like to do is use ffmpeg to convert both the video and audio to known good settings and then mux the file into WTV. Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: mkv to anything not working

On a few rare occasions I've inadvertently downloaded an .mp4 and just deleted.  Have no use or interest in the .mp4 format as I don't use iTunes for anything except organizing music.  Unfortunately, index sites don't currently enable filtering by file format, especially mkv vs mp3, etc.  Instead I've attempted to set a file size filter as, in most cases, mp4 files are somewhat smaller than their mkv equivalent.  Though I've never attempted to convert an .mp4 to .wtv.  Really wish people would not post shows in .mp4 format ;-)
