  • Mea Culpa

I shipped a bad copy of MetaTags.bin in the latest rev or DTB for XP (1.1.0.5).  If you see an error message like the one below when trying to create a new processing condition you will need to generate a new version of the file.

Fortunately it's really easy to fix this one, just click the "Generate MetaTags.bin" button on the bottom right of the PC Editor, select a dvr-ms file to base it on and you're done.  Make sure you have rights to overwrite the existing one (i.e. the file's not marked read-only).

Thanks to Randy Harris for bringing this to my attention.

  • "Protected" file sample needed.

Jere (author of ShowAnalyzer) is looking for a sample of a copy protected show, can someone who has a sample contact him?

  • ShowAnalyzer 0.9.0

Jere released a new version of SA.  He has classified this release as "Stable" so we have even more to be excited about.

    0.9.0 - 20 June 2007
    - Fixed crash caused by 0 length packets in DVRMS files in SchoolHouse
    - Possibly fixed the "leftover tray icon" problem
    - Corrected timing in SMI files
    - Fixed "Never mark last XXX seconds" setting
    - Fixed some shady timing in DVRMS files that was causing infinite loops
    - Fixed mangling of filenames when they contain upper unicode characters
    - Finally fixed that annoying request for a key whenever SA is running in trial mode.

    Find it here.

  • I don't get the iPhone

It looks nice, and it's dressed up nicely, but I really don't get all the hype around the iPhone.  As far as I can tell it doesn't do anything that isn't already available (maybe it does it in a nicer way?)...  For what it's going to cost at launch you could get a Windows Mobile 5/6 device that does more OOTB (and can be made to do really cool things), throw in a huge flash card, and still have enough $$$ to take your honey to a "jacket required" resturant.

    What am I missing?

  • Manual Install Process for DTB Vista

If you're having trouble getting the msi based installer for DTB working on Vista or you are using x64; I posted the bits with some cmd files and instructions for manually installing.  NOTE:  I haven't tested the install process on x64 (I did try it on x86 and it works); so I need someone with x64 to give it a go (make sure you set a restore point first) and report back the results.  I'd also like to get feedback on the instructions from anyone who tries it, they make sense to me but that's not always the best standard of usability ;)

  • Windows Home Server

I've been using WHS since Beta 2, and I love it.  I'm really lazy when it comes to doing backups so the automated backup (with nagging) is great for me; it's even saved me in the limited time I've been using it.  I've been using a home server (w2k3) for a long time to centralize media storage and other server type activties for a long time, but [obviously] being targeted at the enterprise it's not as good a fit as WHS in a home scenario.  I'm really glad Microsoft has created a server product that is targeted at the home and they seem to have done their feature set homework too.  The only feature that I find missing is a mail server, in other server OS's the POP service is available as a component but for some reason it doesn't show up (maybe because WHS is based on Small Business Server).

With RC they added the capability to extend the platform using add-ins, and since then I've been trying to come up with something to build, but I haven't been able to come up with a good idea.  For those of you in the beta program (or anyone who uses a home server), what feature would you like to see?

  • Cablecard?

After reading Chris' FAQ on CableCard in Vista; I have to wonder, with all the feature that MS could have spent it's development dollars on, why they chose CableCard. I understand the desire to check the box next to "Digital Cable Ready" on the spec sheet, but the trade-offs required are antithetical to the purpose of using a PC based PVR.  If you're willing to deal with the hassle of using a PC based PVR, it's because of the capability it enables.  I am constantly amazed at the creativity in consumption demonstrated by those who use tools like DVRMSToolbox, none of which will be possible with this content.

Assuming that you are willing to live with neutered functionality, the next thing that makes this questionable is the expense associated with getting it working (if you can get it working) why anyone would opt-in is beyond me.  You can get the same functionality with a cable company provided DVR for around $10 a month, or a Tivo Series 3 for $420 (+ subscription fees), it would take a long time to get to the cost of a new OCUR equipped PC.  I understand that those solutions don't have the full feature set (DVD player, music, pictures, etc), but a HTPC that does those things (or specialized devices) could sit next to it and still fall far under the price point for a CableCard PC.

I think I'll have to second Ed's take on CableCard.

  • Recording Broker 1.0.1

The new rev of Recording Broker is available to everyone.

    New in this release:

    • Test functionality will poll configured brokers
    • Broker Everything option

RecordingBroker is an application that detects recording conflicts and submits recording requests to other brokers configured in the application.

The solution is contains two applications, RecordingBroker.exe and RecordingBrokerService.exe.  After installation Run RecordingBroker.exe and click Save to write the settings to the registry, then start the service from the Service MMC.

RecordingBroker.exe is the settings tool, use it to add brokers and configure how the service behaves.

Port - the the port the server binds to
Poll Time - how often, in seconds, WMC is polled for conflicts
Secret - because this application could theoretically be used across firewalls (if you wanted to create a relationship with a friend's WMC); this secret is used to hash a portion of the request to verify that the other broker is trusted.  This must be set to the same value on all brokers.
Connection Timeout - how long the broker will wait for a server to respond before failing
Broker Everything - Try to broker all local recordings
Other Brokers - is a list of all the brokers that this machine has a relationship with; to add a broker enter the hostname (or dns name) of the other machine in "New Broker" and click Add.

Settings must be "Save"d before exiting.  After saving settings, restart the service to have them take effect.

RecordingBrokerService.exe is a windows service that acts as a tcp server so other brokers can communicate with that machine, and also polls WMC for recording conflicts so it can send requests to other brokers.

    Enjoy.
